URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

Urinary tract infections are very common and can be uncomfortable, causing burning with urination, frequent urination and abdominal pain.  UTIs are caused by a variety of bacteria and can be difficult to cure. 


What Is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system (kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra). Most commonly in the bladder or cystitis and urethra or urethritis.  These infections are caused mainly by bacteria, especially E.coli.


 Who Is at Risk?

  • Women have more urinary tract infections than men due to having a shorter urethra
  • Older adults
  • People with urinary catheters
  • Individuals with diabetes or weakened immunity
  • Children with urinary tract abnormalities

3. Common Symptoms

  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain (in women) or rectal pain (in men)
  • Fever or chills (if infection spreads to kidneys)

4. Prevention Tips

  • Drink plenty of fluids (especially water).
  • Urinate regularly and fully empty the bladder.
  • Wipe front to back after using the toilet.
  • Urinate after sexual activity.
  • Avoid irritating feminine products (douches, powders).
  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes.

5. Myth Busting

  • Myth: “Only women get UTIs” → Men and children can also get them.
  • Myth: “UTIs go away on their own” → Some may, but most need treatment to prevent complications.
  • Myth: “Cranberry juice cures UTIs” → It may help prevent but not treat infections.

6. When to See a Health Care Provider

  • If symptoms persist more than 1–2 days
  • If there is fever, nausea, back pain
  • If UTIs are recurring
  • In children or older adults with confusion or fever

7. Proper Antibiotic Use

  • Always finish the prescribed course.
  • Don’t share or reuse antibiotics.
  • Don’t demand antibiotics if not needed.
  • Understand the risks of resistance from misuse.
